Founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has the largest membership of any collegiate Greek association in North America. It boasts over 302,000 initiates, and has nearly 13,000 active undergraduate members. Currently headquartered in the magnificent Levere Memorial Temple on the campus of Northwestern University, SAE stands for academic excellence, personal development and the forging of deep and meaningful friendships.
SAE members are guided by the fraternity's creed, The True Gentleman, written by John Walter Wayland, and by the ideals embodied in the Ritual composed by founding member Noble Leslie DeVotie.
SAE initiates include over twenty present and former members of congress, one President of the United States (McKinley), and many other government officials, including the famed G-Man, Untouchable Elliot Ness. They also boast luminaries in culture, media, journalism and sport, including William Faulkner, Sam Elliot, Ernie Pyle and Phil Jackson, as well as many CEOs and other prominent businessmen.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon Colors And Symbols
SAE's colors are Royal Purple and Old Gold and its symbols include the lion, the phoenix, and Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom.
